Zune is a Microsoft brand of portable media players, associated software, and an online service for acquiring and sharing media. The first Zune hardware device was released to the U.S. market as a 30 GB model on November 14, 2006, with a price tag of $249.99.

The initial Zune device comes equipped with a 30 GB hard drive, built-in FM tuner with Radio Data System, 3.0-inch screen, and Wi-Fi networking. For audio, Zune supports MP3, WMA and AAC. Zune supports the Microsoft’s WMV movie format, and the Zune software will transcode MPEG4 and H.264 video to synchronize onto the device.[1] Preloaded music, videos, and images ship with the device.

A key differentiator between Zune and competing players is its Zune-to-Zune Wi-Fi feature. They have enabled the limited sharing of songs, recordings, playlists and pictures with others. Tracks received from another person can be played for up to three days or three plays, whichever comes first, after which it expires unless purchased or downloaded via the Zune Marketplace online. Recipients cannot re-send music or audio files that they have received via the sharing feature. Not all songs are eligible for sharing – record companies can flag songs from the Zune Marketplace as “non-distributable”.

As part of an effort to build a closed, end-to-end ecosystem, Globals Inc., a US incorporated company associated with Microsoft to offer Podcasting service, and Zune uses a new digital rights management system to protect content which is incompatible with other DRM systems including Microsoft PlaysForSure. This ecosystem includes a PC client called the Zune Software and an online store called the Zune Marketplace. Zune does not support audio-books downloaded from Audible.com

The Zune is able to connect to the Xbox 360, which gives users the ability to stream music, videos, and pictures via USB.

Every Zune device creates an opportunity for connection. Wireless Zune-to-Zune sharing lets consumers spontaneously share full-length sample tracks of select songs, homemade recordings, playlists or pictures with friends between Zune devices. Listen to the full track of any song you receive up to three times over three days. If you like a song you hear and want to buy it, you can flag it right on your device and easily purchase it from the Zune Marketplace.

Zune makes it easy to find music you love — whether it’s songs in your existing library or new music from the Zune Marketplace. Easily import your existing music, pictures and videos in many popular formats and browse millions of songs on Zune Marketplace, where you can choose to purchase tracks individually or to buy a Zune Pass subscription to download as many songs as you want for a flat fee.

To get started with great music and videos out of the box, every Zune device is preloaded with content from record labels such as DTS, EMI Music’s Astralwerks Records and Virgin Records, Ninja Tune, Playlouderecordings, Quango Music Group, Sub Pop Records, and V2/Artemis Records.

Celebrating the U.S. launch of the new Zune(TM) digital media player and music service, Microsoft Corp. has worked with a number of cutting-edge artists to stage free concerts in public parks and plazas in urban centers across the country. Today at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle at the first of these Zune concerts, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates took the stage to share his excitement for this next step Microsoft is taking in music and entertainment.

Gates outlined the Zune vision to create new ways for people to connect, discover and share music and entertainment experiences. He was joined onstage by John Richards, morning show host of popular community radio station KEXP, to showcase the new Zune-to-Zune wireless sharing feature. Richards wirelessly sent the inaugural song to Gates, who then surprised the crowd by giving away his Zune device to a member of the audience. Building on the “Hello from Seattle” greeting printed on the back of every Zune device, Richards created a playlist to celebrate Seattle music in honor of the Zune launch. The complete KEXP “Hello from Seattle” playlist will be available on Zune Marketplace for consumers to download.
