Like me, you probably took a lot of photos this year during the holiday season. I have a feature on my cell phone that allows me to upload the photos I take directly to my flickr account, and occasionally I would like to actually save them and print them out. Here are five great tips for saving and printing your holiday photos.

1. Use the best printer ink for the job. There are certain inks that do better when printing photos. Make sure you use a good, high quality ink. Get a great deal on printer ink. Shop around and you will be able to find a good deal on printer ink so you can print out the best photos. You might also want to make sure that you find some great printer paper, as well.

2. Make sure you pick the right print size for your photos. In real life, things like your digital camera’s resolution, its sharpness, and the printer’s print quality are all linked. Don’t expect to make a great 8×10 print from a photo taken with a 1 megapixel digital camera. And don’t bother trying to create poster-sized prints unless you have a photo taken with a multi-megapixel camera.

3. When in doubt, use a good image program to manipulate and crop your photos. With a good program such as Paint Shop Pro you can remove red eye and lighten or darken the photo before you print it.

4. Choose the right printer. If you have a photo that you really want printed and perhaps mounted, it might pay to take the photo to a professional to have it printed. They might charge you a little bit more, but if it’s one that you want to keep for long time and display in a frame, you might consider taking the file to your local photo shop.

5. Get your setting right. There are many different settings on your printer. Make sure that you’ve downloaded the right printer drivers for your printer and that you use the right settings. Some printers have certain quality settings that you can change to get a better print.

Aqua Dots, a popular toy that we’ve featured here on this website, is being pulled from store shelves in Canada. Apparently there are safety concerns that Aqua Dots may contain a chemical that, when swallowed by kids, converts into a so-called “date-rape” drug. This truly is scary, and this Aqua Dots issue has prompted Australian officials to ban a similar toy after three children were hospitalized.

Toys “R” Us in Canada has said it stopped selling the Chinese-made Aqua Dots toy as a precautionary measure. Apparently the problem surfaced in Australia when a similar product called Bindeez was removed from Australian store shelves.

Spin Master Ltd. is the company that distributes Aqua Dots in North America. They have issued a voluntary recall of the Aqua Dots, saying that the company is “working to identify any shipments” that could potentially be included in a recall by U.S. and Canadian officials.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled Aqua Dots as of Wednesday, November 7, 2007, after two kids in the United States were reportedly hospitalized after swallowing the Aqua Dots beads.

If you have the Aqua Dots we strongly suggest that you gather it and all of the beads and wait for further instructions. At last check, the Spin Master Ltd website at www.spinmaster.com was down (perhaps because of all the publicity regarding the Aqua Dots recall).

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Hazard: The coating on the beads that causes the beads to stick to each other when water is added contains a chemical that can turn toxic when many are ingested. Children who swallow the beads can become comatose, develop respiratory depression, or have seizures.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC has received two reports over the past several days of children swallowing Aqua Dots. A 20-month-old child swallowed several dozen beads. He became dizzy and vomited several times before slipping into a comatose state for a period of time, was hospitalized, and has since fully recovered. A second child also vomited and slipped into a comatose state and was hospitalized for five days.

Description: The recalled toy is a craft kit which allows children to create various multi-dimensional designs using small colored beads. The beads fuse together when sprayed with water. The recall applies to all models of Aqua Dots. The product is available in various different kits with accessories such as a drying fan, applicator pen, design templates for the beads, and spray bottle. The product is labeled for ages 4+.

Sold at: Mass merchandisers nationwide from April 2007 through November 2007 for between $17 and $30.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately take the recalled toy away from children and contact Spin Master to return for free replacement beads or a toy of equal value.

Hand sanitizers work by stripping away the outer layer of oil on skin. This prevents bacteria that is present in the body from coming to the surface of your hand. These bacteria that are normally present in the body are generally not the kinds of bacteria that make us sick. In a review of research, Barbara Almanza, an associate professor at Purdue University came to an interesting conclusion–she notes that research shows that hand sanitizers do not reduce the number of bacteria on the hand and in some cases may potentially increase the amount of bacteria on the hand. So the question arises, how can the manufacturers make the 99.9 percent claim?

Manufacturers of hand sanitizers test it on inanimate surfaces — and the manufacturers are able to derive the claims of 99.9 percent of bacteria killed. If the hand sanitizers were fully tested on people’s hands, there would be different results. Using surfaces with controlled variables is an easier way to obtain some type of consistency in the results. But as we are all aware, everyday life is not as consistent.

We need someone who has a proven track record of dynamic leadership on consumer safety issues, especially those issues that involve our kids.

Ann Brown is also urging President George Bush to nominate an additional Commissioner for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission with a similar commitment to keeping consumers safe–again, our especially our kids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission needs to be restored to its full power at this critical time, especially right before the upcoming holiday season.

This additional commissioner would replace Acting Chairman Nancy Nord.

Ann Brown also asked President to find and make available additional staff and emergency funds for toy safety inspections and testing in time for Christmas. Ann Brown called on the President to assign additional federal employees, from the CPSC and elsewhere, to inspect toy stores across the country and toy shipments at key ports to ensure the toys are free from lead, small parts or other hidden hazards. Ann Brown called for emergency funds to expedite testing of the toys for lead and other dangers.

Mattel, Inc. has voluntarily recalled 11 toys globally, including eight pet and furniture playsets sold under the Barbie brand and three Fisher-Price(R) toys, due to impermissible levels of lead.

What’s important to note is that no Barbie(R) dolls are included within the recall. In total, there are 522,000 affected toys in the U.S., and 322,000 affected toys outside of the U.S. Mattel has completed the testing program for the majority of its toys, including all of its toys currently sourced from vendors.

The voluntary recall results from Mattel’s thorough investigation of vendor-sourced toys. Mattel has also globally implemented a strengthened, three-point check system to test toys throughout the manufacturing process.

In the U.S., there are seven recalled Barbie(R)-branded toys. The specific affected parts include:

The playsets affected by the recall were produced by Holder Plastic Company (Holder), a Mattel contract vendor, which subcontracted the painting of miniature toy pets and small furniture pieces to Dong Lian Fa (DLF) and Yip Sing (YS). DLF and YS used uncertified paint and are no longer producing toys for Mattel.

Mattel’s investigation revealed that the subcontractors painted the affected toys between March 2007 and August 2007. However Mattel is being cautious and recalling the entire production of the seven toys painted by the subcontractors. Therefore, toys manufactured beginning in October 2006 are included within the recall. The toys being recalled were sold at retail between November 2006 and August 2007.

Among the three Fisher-Price(R) toys recalled are two Fisher-Price(R) GEOTRAX(TM) toys and one “It’s a Big Big World” toy. Fisher-Price(R) toys with specific parts affected include:

GEOTRAX(TM) Rail & Road System Freightway Transport(TM)- yellow headlights on train car and miniature ladder

GEOTRAX(TM) Special Track Pack(TM) - yellow headlights on train car and miniature ladder

“It’s a Big Big World” 6-in-1 Bongo Band - painted decal on top of clear plastic on drum

The two GEOTRAX(TM) toys were manufactured by Apex Manufacturing Company Ltd. (Apex), one of Mattel’s contract vendors, which outsourced paint work to a subcontractor, Boyi Plastic Products Factory (Boyi). Apex supplied Boyi with certified paint; however, the toys were manufactured with uncertified paint. Boyi is no longer in business. The two GEOTRAX(TM) toys that tested for impermissible levels of lead were manufactured between July 31, 2006, and September 4, 2006; however, the painted parts were stored and incorporated into toy production throughout the year. Mattel is being cautious and recalling toys shipped between August 3, 2006, and July 31, 2007.

The Fisher-Price(R) “It’s a Big Big World” 6-in-1 Bongo Band toy was manufactured by Shun On Factory, one of Mattel’s contract vendors, which outsourced the molding and painting of one plastic piece. A subcontractor, Jingying Tampo Printing Processing Factory, used uncertified paint on the affected piece. The “It’s a Big Big World” 6-in-1 Bongo Band was manufactured between May 19, 2007, and August 1, 2007.

Mattel is working in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulatory agencies worldwide. Mattel is also working with retailers worldwide to identify and remove affected products from retail shelves.

How to Return Affected Toys/Parts:

1) The first step is to determine if you have a toy that has been affected by the recall. To do so, go here where you will find a complete list of each toy recalled, including color photos, toy model numbers and affected date codes. You can locate toy model numbers on the bottom of most recalled toys.

2) Once you determine that you think you own a Mattel toy affected by the recall, you are prompted to fill out a form (online) or provide their postal address (via phone), and Mattel will send you (via email or to a postal address) a color brochure with photos, toy numbers and date code ranges of every affected toy, as well as a pre-paid mailing label for return of the affected part(s).

3) After receiving your returned, affected part(s), Mattel will send you replacement parts for each affected product, as well as bonus pieces/parts.

Mattel recommends that you do not return toys to retailers for three reasons:

1) Mattel can help you determine if a toy has been affected by the recall (vs. returning an unaffected toy)

2) Mattel will provide you with a replacement part for each toy part affected by the recall

3) Mattel will handle affected products in an environmentally friendly way

You do not need to have the toy’s original packaging or a receipt to return affected products to Mattel.
